near woods
long
lost
asking directions, recipes to
soothe hunger
When winds arrive
big
bad
causing straw, sticks to blow
and houses tumble down
When rain falls
beneath a sky
bone
dry
leaving behind, below
the river’s maw
When apples offer
red
delicious
promises of eternal
eternalness
That is when the clock
midnights
and godmothers grant wishes
to those who arrive
brandishing
the strength of who they are
and the wisdom to turn fairy tales
into legends
