Amanita

by Charlie Kahner Enderby

I wanna be a mushroom when I die

Watch as the stringy fungi rise up from my corpse

And mold and mesh into each other

I’ll be buried in the field

With the cows and the coyotes

Under the weeping willow

If you listen closely, you’ll hear me laughing in the wind

I wonder if he’ll see me

I wonder if he’ll step on me

With his burnt leather cowboy boots

Or will he pick me up from the ground

and eat me right up

Like the finest filet on a Friday night

Maybe I’ll poison him

Make him rot next to me

Forever stuck listening to my beggings of love

Until the cows turn to dust and bones

Until the field of grass is a field of my legacy

Add all the little boys are poisoned, too
